Three kinds of car key, all made at the car

A plain blade key, common on cars and trucks built before the late 1990s, is cut to code from the door lock and works the moment it comes off the machine. A transponder key looks the same but carries a chip that the car has to recognize before it will start; we cut the blade and then program the chip through the diagnostic port. A smart fob for a push-to-start car has no blade on the outside and is programmed the same way, with the emergency blade inside cut to match the door.

All keys lost, rental cars, and the makes that push back

Losing every key is the call people dread, and it is a normal day for us. The technician reads the lock or pulls the key code from the VIN, cuts a blade, and programs the new key while the lost one is erased so it can never start the car again. You do not need a working key to begin. What you need is to be with the car and to have proof it is yours.

Rental cars are different. We open a rental for the renter with ID and the rental agreement, but a new key for a rental car needs the rental company's authorization, and the dispatcher will tell you that on the first call. Most companies would rather send a replacement vehicle than approve a key, so call them before us.

A few manufacturers restrict access to their key data. Some Mercedes-Benz and BMW models and newer Volkswagen and Audi model years require the dealer to order a key against the VIN, and we tell you that honestly on the phone rather than driving out and failing. For those cars we can still open the door, extract a broken key, or make a mechanical key for the door and trunk.

What to have ready when you call

The dispatcher needs the year, make and model, whether you have any working key at all, and exactly where the car is, down to the garage level if it is in one. The technician will ask for a photo ID and the registration or insurance card in your name. If the car is titled to a spouse or parent who is not there, a photo of the registration and a call from them is usually enough.

All keys lost, step by step at the car

When every key is gone, the job runs in the same order each time, and knowing the order makes the wait easier. None of it needs a tow, and none of it needs the dealer unless your make is one of the restricted ones covered further down.

An all-keys-lost visit takes longer than making a spare, because the key code has to be found before anything is cut and some makes add security steps to the programming. The dispatcher gives you an honest time for your make on the phone rather than a guess in the parking lot.

• Ownership first: photo ID and the registration or insurance card are checked before any tool comes out
• If the car is locked, it is opened without damage so the technician can reach the ignition and the diagnostic port
• The key code is read from a door lock or pulled from the VIN, and the blade is cut on the machine in the van
• The transponder chip or smart key is programmed through the diagnostic port; some makes need a security code or a timed wait first
• The lost keys are erased from the car, so a key dropped in a theme park lot can no longer start it
• Doors, trunk, ignition and remote buttons are tested with you, and a spare key is made while the equipment is still connected

Leased, financed and company cars

A leased or financed car is yours to drive, and a key for it is made the same way as for a car you own outright. The bank or leasing company holds the title, but what the technician asks for is the same as for any owner: your photo ID and the registration or insurance card in your name.

Check your lease before you turn the car in. Lease-end inspections commonly ask for every key the car came with, and a missing one can be charged on the final invoice under your lease terms. Replacing a lost fob months before turn-in is a calmer job than doing it the week the car goes back.

Company and fleet cars need a word from the business that owns them, usually a call or an email from the fleet manager naming the driver. Once that is in hand, the key is cut and programmed at the car like any other, whether the vehicle sits in an office lot in Maitland or a job site in Horizon West.

When the dealer really is the right call

We would rather send you to the dealer than drive out and fail. The dealer is the right call when your make keeps its key data to itself: most newer Mercedes-Benz models and the later BMW generations need a key ordered against the VIN, and those pages explain which years. For those owners we still open the car and repair a cracked key shell.

The dealer is also the right call for a model year so new that locksmith programming equipment does not support it yet, for a key that fails under your new-car warranty, and when the fault turns out to be the car's own electronics, such as a failed immobilizer or body control module, rather than the key. The dispatcher asks enough on the first call to spot these, and you hear it before anyone drives.
