How Mercury key programming works
Mercury programming is Ford programming. The key is cut from the vehicle's code on the mobile machine and registered at the diagnostic port, and older PATS vehicles hold a timed security delay of about ten minutes before they accept it. Ford's system expects two programmed keys, so an all-keys-lost visit makes two rather than one. Lost keys are erased so they will not start the engine.
Things to know before you call about a Mercury
- A Grand Marquis with a couple of hundred thousand miles on it usually has an ignition worn by the key rather than by age. A key cut fresh from the vehicle's code, instead of copied from the worn original, very often cures a sticking ignition on its own.
