We Do Locksmith

Rekeying service

Rekey Locks in Orlando, FL

Rekeying makes your existing locks take a new key and refuse every old one, with no new hardware and no holes in the door. It is the first thing to do after closing on a house, when a key goes missing, when a roommate or cleaner stops coming, or between tenants. A We Do Locksmith technician rekeys most Orlando homes at the door in under an hour, keys every door alike when the keyways allow it, and quotes a flat price per lock on the phone before the visit.

Locksmith's hands rekeying a lock cylinder on a workbench

Rekey or replace

Rekeying changes the pins inside the cylinder so a new key turns it and the old keys do not. The lock body, the finish and the door stay as they are. It costs less than new hardware and it is the whole answer when the only problem is who has a key.

Replacement is the answer when the lock itself is the problem: worn, sticking, corroded, damaged in a break-in attempt, or a builder-grade knob you want to upgrade to a real deadbolt. Rekeying a weak lock leaves it weak. The technician says which is right for each door and quotes both, and the lock change page covers the replacement side.

  • New homeowners: rekey every exterior door and the garage entry on day one
  • Lost key: rekey the doors that key opened, not the whole house
  • Mixed brands: swap cylinders so one key still works everywhere

After a closing in Lake Nona, Horizon West or Winter Garden

New construction in Orlando changes hands with a lot of keys in circulation: the builder's contractor key, the punch-list crew's key, the keys the sales office handed to inspectors and cleaners. Some builders reset the locks at closing and many do not. Rekeying on move-in day ends the question, and it is the same visit for a resale home in Dr. Phillips or College Park, where the previous owner's neighbor, dog walker and ex may all still have a copy.

Rekeying is also the right move when a roommate leaves, a cleaner or contractor stops coming, or a key was lost on a keychain with your address on it. Tell the technician which doors the missing key opened and only those need doing.

Vacation rentals, landlords and what cannot be rekeyed

Landlords get a rekey between tenants the same day keys are returned, with fresh keys cut on the spot and a copy for the office. Vacation-rental owners along US-192 and the Davenport corridor usually have a keypad on the front door and a keyed lock on the garage or the pool gate; we rekey the keyed ones and reset the codes on the keypad in the same visit, with the owner's or manager's authorization.

A few things cannot be rekeyed. Cheap locks with no removable cylinder are replaced instead. A worn cylinder that already skips pins will not hold a new pinning. And a lock cannot be rekeyed to a key of a different keyway; a Schlage key will never open a Kwikset lock, so mixed houses get matching cylinders or a replacement, quoted before the work starts.

What Orlando customers say

  • Hussein is the best. Locked the key of a McLaren 720 in the frunk; he managed to open the door and then pop the frunk a little with some tools and grab the key. Saved absolutely everything, and it only took him 20 minutes to arrive on the scene.

  • Noah helped me get a new key fob for my 2025 Honda Civic after I lost my keys in a different state. After finding my lost keys he reprogrammed the old ones too, for free. Would recommend this mobile locksmith.

Questions we hear every day

How much does it cost to rekey a house in Orlando?

It depends on how many locks, and that is the only variable. Count the exterior doors, tell the dispatcher, and you get one flat number before anyone drives. Keying every door alike is part of the job, not an extra.

How long does rekeying take?

Roughly ten to fifteen minutes per lock once the technician is at the door. A typical Orlando house with four or five exterior locks is done in under an hour, including cutting the new keys.

Can you rekey my locks to a key I already have?

Often, yes. If the key is the same keyway as the lock, we pin the lock to it. That is how a whole house ends up on the one key you already carry, and how a new lock gets matched to the rest.

Do I need to replace the locks after a break-in, or is rekeying enough?

If the lock was not damaged and the intruder took or copied a key, rekeying is enough. If the lock or the door was forced, the hardware is usually damaged inside even when it looks fine, and replacement is the honest recommendation. The technician checks each door and tells you.
