How Oldsmobile key programming works
Most Oldsmobile keys involve no electronic programming at all: VATS keys need the correct resistor value, PassLock keys need only the cut, and either may need a short relearn cycle after ignition work, which the technician performs on the spot. The exception is the 2002 to 2004 Bravada, which is a chipped PassKey III truck and is programmed at the diagnostic port like any other GM of that era. The dispatcher asks which model you have so the price on the phone is the price on the driveway.
Things to know before you call about an Oldsmobile
- A wrong VATS pellet value disables the starter for a few minutes, so trying a handful of old keys from a drawer actively slows things down. Let the technician read the value from the vehicle first.

Can you still make Oldsmobile keys?

Why does my Alero crank but not start after a new battery?
It is most likely asking for the PassLock relearn cycle, which the technician can perform there and then. It is not a new key.
