Chevrolet keys, cut and programmed at your car
Chevrolet Key Replacement in Orlando, FL
Chevrolet has used four security systems since the 1980s, and two of them put no chip in the key at all. The system in your Silverado or Equinox decides whether the job is a quick cut or a timed relearn, and we identify it from the year and model before quoting. We Do Locksmith makes Chevrolet keys at the vehicle, from work trucks on a site in Apopka or Sanford to rental Malibus stranded in a hotel garage on International Drive.

Key types by year
Which Chevrolet key do you have?
| Model years | Key type | What that means for replacement |
|---|---|---|
| 1986 to about 2007, no chip in the key | VATS pellet key or plain PASSLock key | VATS cars (Corvette, Camaro, Impala) use a resistor pellet that must match one of fifteen values; PASSLock trucks and sedans use a plain key with the sensor in the ignition. Both are cut, not programmed. |
| About 2006 onward, twist-key models (PK3 and PK3+) | Transponder or remote-head key | Impala, Silverado, Tahoe, Equinox, Cruze. The chip registers through the diagnostic port; on some years the relearn is a timed procedure that takes up to half an hour, and we plan for it. |
| About 2011 onward, push-button trims | Smart key (proximity fob) | Volt and Malibu first, then Camaro, Cruze, Equinox, Traverse and the 2019 and newer Silverado. Paired at the vehicle with the lost fobs erased. |
How Chevrolet key programming works
VATS and PASSLock keys are cut, not programmed; the pellet value or the cut is the whole job. PK3 and PK3+ transponder keys register through the diagnostic port, and on some 2007 to 2013 vehicles the relearn runs in three timed ten-minute cycles that cannot be skipped. Smart fobs pair in minutes. All-keys-lost includes erasing the missing keys. For a fleet of Silverados or Express vans, technicians like Henry and Berk will do several trucks in one stop.
Things to know before you call about a Chevrolet
- A PASSLock truck that cranks but will not start after a new battery or a replaced ignition needs the ten-minute relearn, not a new key. Tell the dispatcher what changed.
- A VATS key with the wrong pellet turns the lock and then disables the starter for several minutes. Stop trying after one attempt or you keep resetting the timer.
- Rental Chevrolets out of MCO are opened for the renter with ID and the rental agreement. A replacement key for a rental has to come through the rental company, which we tell you on the phone.
Pricing for Chevrolet keys
VATS and PASSLock keys cost little because there is nothing to program. PK3 chip keys and smart fobs cost more, and a year with the long relearn is quoted for the time. One flat price for your exact year and trim on the phone, no separate call-out fee, same rate before midnight as at noon.

Chevrolet key questions
Does my Chevy key have a chip?
Usually not if the truck is 2006 or older; it is a VATS pellet key or a plain PASSLock key. From about 2006 or 2007 most Chevrolets moved to a PK3 transponder or a smart fob. Tell us the year and model and we bring the right one.
Can you make a Silverado key at a job site if I lost them all?
Yes. Depending on the year it is a pellet or plain cut, or a transponder relearn or fob pairing with the lost keys erased, done at the truck in Apopka, Sanford or wherever the crew is working.
Why does my Chevrolet key take half an hour to program?
Some 2007 to 2013 GM vehicles require three timed ten-minute cycles before the new key is accepted. It is the vehicle's procedure, not the technician's speed, and it is planned into the visit.
