Motorcycle Key Replacement in Orlando, FL

Plenty of locksmiths will not take on a motorcycle key. The cylinder is tiny, the key code is seldom stamped anywhere you can read it, and a number of makes layer an immobilizer chip or a security fob on top. We Do Locksmith takes those jobs at the bike, anywhere around Orlando: a basic Sportster key, a Honda carrying HISS, a personal scooter, and the rental scooters along International Drive, which are regular work for us.

Any year, no immobilizerMechanical key onlyWith no key left at all, the technician decodes or impressions the ignition cylinder and cuts from that. The seat lock and fuel cap normally share the same cut, so copies for them come out of the same visit.
Honda with HISS, many models from 2001Chipped key matched to the ECUHISS reads a chip in the key before the engine will run. Copying a working key is routine; with every key lost it becomes a specialist job, and we work out on the phone whether your model can be done at the bike.
Harley-Davidson, 2007 and laterIgnition key plus hands-free Smart Security fobCarried within a few feet, the fob disarms the bike by itself. Without it, the five-digit personal code keyed in on the turn signal switches does the same job until a new fob is activated at a Harley-Davidson dealer. We cut the mechanical key at the bike.
Harley Touring with power locksFob with a pop-out blade and a keyless ignition knobOne press and the fork lock, saddlebags and Tour-Pak secure together, and the blade hidden in the fob works those locks by hand if the fob battery dies. A bike accepts only two fobs, and further ones come through a Harley-Davidson dealer.
Yamaha, Kawasaki, Suzuki, BMW (immobilizer models)Chipped key or proximity fobModel by model, some of these accept a new key from locksmith equipment and others only from the manufacturer. The dispatcher checks which one you have before any van is booked.
Fork, seat and luggage locksSeparate cylinders, often on one keyOn most bikes the steering lock, seat, fuel cap and helmet lock share the ignition key. Saddlebags, top cases and older separate fork locks often run on another key, and many can be rekeyed or fitted with cylinders to match.

How Motorcycle key programming works

On a bike without an immobilizer the job is all mechanical. The technician reads the cuts from the ignition cylinder and makes a key that also opens the seat and the fuel cap, which leaves you carrying one key instead of three. Saddlebags, a top case or a separate fork lock that use other keys can often be repinned to that same cut while the van is there. Bikes with an immobilizer need the chip paired to the ECU as well. Where the maker allows that outside the dealer, we pair it at the bike; where it does not, we still cut the metal key and give you a straight answer about the rest. Honda's own explanation of HISS is that a key cut to exactly the right shape will not start the bike unless its chip carries the matching code, and many immobilizer systems relearn all their keys in one session, so every key you still have should come to the appointment. With nothing left to copy, some bikes can be given a new key on site and some need a new control unit from the dealer, and the make, model and year you give on the phone decide which. Harley riders are better off knowing their five-digit security PIN by heart, because with it the bike starts with no fob present and everything that follows goes faster. The fob itself is activated by a Harley-Davidson dealer, so on a Harley our share of the work is the metal key and the locks.

Things to know before you call about a Motorcycle

  • Harley fobs run on a CR2032 coin cell that Harley's manual says to replace every year, and a neglected one picks its moment, usually at a fuel pump an hour from home. Knowing the five-digit PIN means the bike starts anyway, and you ride back instead of calling for a trailer.
  • Scooters and small bikes change hands with one key and no paperwork all the time. Proof that the bike is yours still comes before any cutting, so have the title or the registration ready along with photo identification.
  • If no personal code was ever set on a Harley with factory security and the fob is lost or damaged while the bike is armed, Harley's own service information says the security module has to be replaced. Setting the five-digit code from the owner's manual today saves that whole job later.
  • Registering a key on many immobilizer bikes wipes any key that is not there at the time. A spare left in a drawer at home can stop working, so bring every key you own to the appointment.
  • During Leesburg's spring Bikefest, downtown streets close to cars, and the drive from 39th Street is close to an hour. If a key goes missing there, give the dispatcher the nearest open cross street so the technician can park and carry the tools to the bike.

Pricing for Motorcycle keys

Cutting a plain key from the ignition is the lowest-cost job on this page, and a key with an immobilizer chip costs more. On a Harley the fob is activated at a Harley-Davidson dealer, so our estimate there covers the metal key and any lock work. A bike with no key at all takes longer to decode than a copy takes to cut, and the free estimate on the phone accounts for that.

Motorcycle key questions

My bike has no key at all. Can you still make one?

Yes. At the bike, the technician decodes or impressions the ignition cylinder, cuts a working key from it, and tries it in the seat lock and fuel cap so a single key runs everything.

Do you make keys for rental scooters on International Drive?

We do, once the owner or the rental company authorizes it. On a personal scooter, the title or registration plus photo identification is all the technician needs to begin.

I lost my Harley's hands-free fob. Can you get me riding?

Usually, if a personal code was set. You key the five-digit code in on the turn signal switches to disarm the bike and ride it, and we cut a metal key if that is gone too. The replacement fob itself is bought and activated through a Harley-Davidson dealer.

Can you make one key work the ignition, fork lock, seat and saddlebags?

Often, yes. The seat and fuel cap usually match the ignition already, and saddlebag, top case or separate fork lock cylinders can often be rekeyed or replaced to match it. Some aftermarket luggage locks cannot be changed, and the technician tells you which before starting.

What proof of ownership do you need before cutting a motorcycle key?

Photo ID plus the title or registration in your name. If the bike changed hands recently and the paperwork still shows the seller, mention it when you call, and the dispatcher tells you what the technician needs to see. No proof, no key, whatever the bike.
