Locksmith notes for St. Augustine

Tourist lockouts drive many of our St. Augustine calls: rental cars in the historic district parking garage, keys left in hotel rooms, and beach parking lots on Anastasia Island. We verify ownership or rental paperwork before opening any vehicle.

The historic core has some of the oldest doors in Florida, and Lincolnville and Davis Shores homes often carry hardware that needs careful repair rather than replacement. Out by World Golf Village and the outlets, the housing is new construction where rekeys and smart lock upgrades are the norm.

St. Augustine is the far end of the area we cover, about 38 miles down I-95 from our Southside shop. World Golf Village and the SR 16 exit are the quicker side of town. Downtown means leaving I-95 and crossing the city, Anastasia Island adds the Bridge of Lions, a drawbridge that can hold us up when it opens for boats, and Vilano Beach adds the Usina Bridge. The dispatcher builds all of that into the arrival time you get.

Older houses downtown and in Lincolnville can still have mortise locks, rim locks and skeleton-key interior doors. We repair that hardware and rekey the cylinders that allow it rather than boring new holes in an old door. The city's Historic Architectural Review Board reviews exterior changes such as doors in its historic districts, so check with the city before swapping anything visible from the street.

St. Johns County lets cars onto parts of the beach from ramps such as A Street in St. Augustine Beach and Cubbage Road at Crescent Beach. If you are locked out and the car is sitting on the sand, tell us which ramp you came down and roughly how far along the beach you are, so the technician knows where to look.

St. Augustine questions

Do you come all the way to St. Augustine?

Yes, though at roughly 38 miles it is about a 45-minute drive from our shop. We will tell you the realistic arrival time when you call so you can decide whether to wait for us.

Can you open a rental car in the St. Augustine parking garage?

We can, after confirming the rental agreement matches the vehicle. Downtown garage lockouts are common for visitors and the technician can usually be in and out quickly.

Are you a St. Augustine locksmith or a Jacksonville one?

We are a Jacksonville shop in Southside, and St. Augustine is the edge of our area at roughly 45 minutes away. We come down for lockouts, lost car keys, rekeys and lock changes, and we tell you the real arrival time on the phone. If you are locked out and cannot wait that long, a shop based in town may reach you sooner, and that is a fair choice.

Can you work on the old locks in a historic St. Augustine house?

Yes. Mortise locks, rim locks and old knob sets can usually be cleaned, repaired or rekeyed, and we keep the original hardware where it still works. For any change that shows from the street, check with the city's historic review process first.

Do you make car keys in St. Augustine?

Yes, at the car, whether it is parked at the outlets, on Anastasia Island or in a driveway near World Golf Village. Bring a photo ID and proof that the car is yours. The new key is cut and programmed on site, and the lost key is deleted from the car before the technician leaves.

Do you cover St. Augustine Beach and Vilano Beach?

Yes. St. Augustine Beach is across the Bridge of Lions or the SR 312 bridge, and Vilano Beach is over the Usina Bridge, so both add some minutes to the trip. The dispatcher tells you the arrival window for your exact address before anyone leaves.

Locked out in St. Augustine?

Tell us where you are and what you drive or which door it is. The estimate on the phone is free, and a technician comes in a marked We Do Locksmith vehicle.
