Motorcycle key replacement in Jacksonville, at your bike

Motorcycle Key Replacement in Jacksonville, FL

Motorcycle keys are a specialty most locksmiths avoid. The ignition cylinder is small, the code is often stamped nowhere useful, and several makes add an immobilizer chip or a fob. We Do Locksmith makes motorcycle keys at the bike anywhere in Jacksonville, from a plain Sportster key to a Honda with HISS.

Which Motorcycle key do you have?

Model yearsKey typeWhat that means for replacement
Most bikes, all yearsPlain metal keyCut from the ignition cylinder by decoding or impressioning when no key exists. Gas cap and seat locks are usually keyed alike and get copies at the same time.
Honda 2001 onward, many modelsHISS immobilizer transponder keyA chip in the key must match the ECU. Duplicates need a working key; all-keys-lost is a specialist job we plan for on the phone.
Harley-Davidson 2007 onwardKey plus Smart Security System fobThe hands-free fob arms and disarms the bike, and a lost fob can be bypassed with the owner's five-digit PIN. The metal key is cut from the ignition on keyed models; a replacement fob is assigned to the bike by a Harley-Davidson dealer.
Harley-Davidson Touring with power locksHands-free fob with a slide-out key bladeThe blade that slides out of the fob locks and unlocks the fork, saddlebags and Tour-Pak by hand, so losing the fob means losing that key too. Give us the model year and we say on the phone what we can do at the bike.
Yamaha, Kawasaki, Ducati, BMW with immobilizersCoded key or proximity fobVaries by model; some are locksmith-programmable, some need the manufacturer. We tell you which before you book.
Yamaha Star Venture, Star Eluder, XMAX, TMAXSmart key with an emergency code cardThese come with one smart key and a code card. Yamaha keeps no record of the code, and Yamaha says that if both are lost the whole smart key system has to be replaced.
Kawasaki Concours 14KIPASS proximity fobEach fob sends its own code to the bike's KIPASS unit, which releases the steering lock and main switch. A new fob has to be registered to that unit, and we tell you before booking whether that happens at the bike or at a dealer.
Ducati 2006 to 2018Transponder key, some sets with a red key and code cardDucati used several immobilizer setups in those years. On bikes sold with a red key, two black keys and a code card, the card holds the override code, so keep it with the red key.

How Motorcycle key programming works

For a plain key the work is mechanical: the technician decodes the ignition and cuts a key that also turns the gas cap and seat lock. On many bikes one key works the ignition, fork lock, fuel cap and seat or helmet lock, so when the ignition is hard to reach we decode one of the others instead, and before leaving we try the new key in every lock on the bike. For immobilizer bikes we program the chip to the ECU where the manufacturer allows it, or handle the mechanical key and advise on the fob. A new HISS key is registered to a Honda using a key that already works, which is why a spare made now is worth far more than one made after the last key is gone. Harley owners should have their five-digit security PIN handy; it lets the bike start without the fob and speeds a fob replacement.

Things to know before you call about a Motorcycle

  • Harley fobs are convenient until the battery dies at a gas station. Know your PIN, because it starts the bike without the fob and saves a tow. The fob takes a CR2032 coin cell, and Harley-Davidson says to replace it every year.
  • Aftermarket ignition cylinders on custom bikes often use unusual keyways; tell the dispatcher what is stamped on the key or cylinder so we bring the right blanks.
  • Honda's owner's manuals say that if every HISS key and the key tag are lost, the dealer has to replace the PGM-FI unit or ignition control module. Down to one key? Make a spare now and keep the tag somewhere other than the bike.
  • Harley-Davidson allows only two hands-free fobs to be assigned to a bike at a time, and the assigning is done at the dealer. We cut the mechanical keys and tell you up front which part of the job is ours and which is the dealer's.
  • A Yamaha smart key bike or a Ducati sold with a code card depends on that card when keys go missing. Photograph it, keep it away from the bike, and have it in hand when you call us.
  • One key for everything only works while every lock still matches. A fuel cap or seat lock replaced after a drop or a break-in often has its own key, so we check each lock and either match it to your key or cut a second key for it.
  • We ask for photo ID and the title or registration on every motorcycle key, and the VIN has to match the bike. If you just bought it and the title is not in your name yet, tell the dispatcher what paperwork you have before we drive.

What sets the price of a Motorcycle key

A plain motorcycle key cut from the ignition is inexpensive. Immobilizer keys and Harley fobs cost more because of the electronics. Tell us the make and model and the estimate is free.

Motorcycle key questions

Can you make a motorcycle key with no key at all?

Yes. We decode or impression the ignition cylinder at the bike and cut a new key. Bring the title or registration and ID.

Do you replace Harley-Davidson fobs?

Harley-Davidson has a dealer assign a new hands-free fob to the bike, so that part is theirs. We cut the mechanical ignition key on keyed models, and with your five-digit security PIN the bike can be started meanwhile.

Are you a motorcycle locksmith that comes to the bike?

Yes. We make motorcycle keys wherever the bike is parked in Jacksonville: a driveway, an apartment lot, a parking garage or the shoulder of the road. Tell the dispatcher the make, model and year and which keys you still have, and the estimate is free.

I lost the only key to my Honda with HISS. Can you help?

We can cut a new key from the locks at the bike, so the ignition switch, fork lock and other locks turn again. Starting the engine is the hard part: Honda's manuals say that with every key and the key tag gone, the dealer replaces the PGM-FI unit or ignition control module. We explain your options on the phone before we drive.

What do I need to show to get a motorcycle key made?

A photo ID and the title or registration, with a VIN that matches the bike. We ask every time because a motorcycle can be loaded onto a trailer in minutes, and you should want a locksmith who checks. Bought the bike recently? Tell us what paperwork you have before we drive.
